The Basket Opens: A Threshold in the Sky, July 19–21

This blog is centered in the reality of the interconnection between the movement of stars and planets, the earth’s rhythms, and human culture. There is no separation where one part shifts and another is unaffected. There's a moment coming this week that I've been tracking for months. Its effects may correlate directly with what we sense in the world or in ourselves, or it could be subtle within you.

Between July 19 and 21, four outer planets — Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — will each sit near 4° of their signs (Leo, Gemini, Aries, and Aquarius), locked into a tight geometry. Astrologers call it the Barbault Basket, named for André Barbault, the French astrologer who spent decades tracking how the outer planets' movements through the sky correlate with the rise and fall of civilizations. He named this exact coming convergence years before his death in 2019 — a "splendid relaunch" moment, arriving after the compressed, high-tension years the outer planets have been describing since 2020.

I share this because this is the kind of sky-event that asks something of us. It doesn’t require or ask for belief, but attention or awareness. 

As Above, So Below

Barbault's method wasn't fortune-telling. It was pattern-recognition across centuries: when the slow planets cluster tightly, something in the collective compresses — old structures strain, crack, sometimes collapse. When they loosen into harmonious geometry, as they're doing this week, the historical pattern tends toward reorganization — new forms emerging from what the compression broke open.

We're not separate from that motion. Ecospirituality has always insisted that the cosmos is not a metaphor laid over human life — it's a living system we are woven into, the same way the mycelial web beneath a forest floor is not a metaphor for connection but connection itself, doing its slow underground work. The sky doesn't determine our choices. But it does describe a field, a texture, a season we're already standing inside. What we do with that season — individually and together — is the part that's ours to live out and embody.

This week, the field is this: Jupiter — expansion, meaning, faith — stepping newly into Leo, opposite Pluto's slow work of unearthing what's been buried in Aquarius' domain of systems, networks, and collective belonging. Held on either side by Uranus in Gemini (rupture, revelation, new communication) and Neptune in Aries (the dissolving of an old, self-originating story about who we are). Four planet in one shape; one brief window of coherence inside the much longer unraveling we are witnessing.

Barbault read moments like this as the hinge point of a chaotic cycle turning toward something more constructive — not utopia or collapse, but the serious, unglamorous work of rebuilding on new ground.

What To Look For In Your Own Chart

• Do you have any planets or angles (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Midheaven) near 4° of Leo, Aquarius, Gemini, or Aries? If so, this week's geometry is touching something specific and personal in you — not just the collective weather.

• Where in your life has something been quietly compressing, the way the outer planets have been compressing since 2020? What wants to loosen now?

• Leo asks: where are you being invited to lead as authentically yourself, not a performed version of yourself?

• Aquarius asks: what belongs to the group, the collective, not just to you alone?

• Gemini asks: what wants to finally be spoken or expressed?

• Aries asks: what old story about your own beginning is ready to be seen through, and let go?

  
  

If none of this lands with precision in your own chart, it still moves through you — the way weather moves through a body even when you're indoors. This is mundane astrology's gift: it reminds us that we're living inside something larger than our personal transits, something the whole species is metabolizing together.

A Small Practice for the Window

If you're drawn to mark this threshold rather than just read about it: sometime between now and July 21, find a quiet ten minutes outside. As you walk out of the door, feel that as a threshold you are crossing. Find a spot to sit and become aware of your feet on the earth and of your breath. Notice the trees that provide that breath. Quiet the mind, soften the body. Allow a curiosity to lead you — what in your own life feels like it's been under pressure? Compressed, held too tightly, waiting. Ask it what it needs in order to loosen. And just feel that pressure and allow it. Listen both within to your inner wisdom and around you. What creatures, elements, movements are around you? What do you notice?

You don't need an answer right away. The basket's work isn't instant; it's a door left ajar. What matters is that you noticed it opening, and that you were paying attention when it did.
